Unit 4 big game season closures

Posted: Friday, December 31, 2010

JUNEAU - Unit 4 will close for the hunting of Sitka black-tailed deer and brown bear (registration hunt RB077) under the state season today. This includes all of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands, as well as smaller islands within the unit.

For deer, the federal subsistence season for federally qualified hunters continues on federal lands within Unit 4 until Monday, Jan. 31, unless closed earlier by the Federal Subsistence Board.

Federally qualified subsistence users continuing to hunt into the January season are reminded to obtain a valid 2011 hunting license. Deer harvest tickets issued for this year continue to be valid for the federal January 2011 period, but hunters should be aware of the land ownership where they are hunting. Additional information and maps concerning the federal subsistence season and hunter qualifications can be gathered by contacting the USFS district office in Sitka at 747-6671, or online at http://alaska.fws.gov/asm/index.cfml. Questions regarding the federal season may also be directed to the district office in Juneau at 586-8800, in Hoonah at 945-3631, or the Admiralty National Monument at 586-8790.

Please contact the Sitka ADF&G office at 747-5449 for more information.

For brown bear, individuals who obtained registration permits for brown bears this fall are reminded to complete and return their hunt report cards to the ADF&G office in Sitka by close of business on Monday, Jan. 17. Unsuccessful hunters and hunters who registered but did not hunt may report online at www.hunt.alaska.gov. All hunters who received permits must submit reports, even if they did not hunt.
