The Thunder Mountain boys’ soccer team went north over the weekend for the first Anchorage trip in the program’s history.

It proved difficult for the Falcons as they went 0-3 against Palmer, Eagle River and East Anchorage, losing 4-0, 2-1 and 1-0, respectively. But TMHS coach Ry Walters said it was the type of experience his young side needed.

“It’s always good to go play in different regions to see what others are doing all over the state,” he said.

Thunder Mountain finished fifth in the inaugural Sitka Invitational Softball Tournament after dropping consecutive games to Ketchikan and Kodiak on Saturday in the double-elimination tourney.

The tournament included host Sitka, Ketchikan, Homer, Kodiak and TMHS.

Thunder Mountain began its road trip with a 7-5 win over Kodiak on Thursday.

The Falcons tallied 10 base knocks and scored one run in the first, and two in the second, third and fourth innings in a five-inning game.

It’s been 21 years since the Juneau-Douglas boys’ team last missed the state track and field championships.

That streak is in serious jeopardy.

The Region V Track & Field Championships begin at 1 p.m. today at Thunder Mountain High School, and it’s the host Falcons who are threatening to break the Crimson Bears’ 4A Southeast stranglehold over Ketchikan, which has run longer than any seniors competing in the weekend’s 2A/3A and 4A events have been alive.

This weekend’s event in Haines served as a final tuneup for most Southeast runners with the Region V track meet quickly approaching, but it also saw the Falcons boys’ team once again dominate the competition.

Thunder Mountain took first place on the boys’ side with 137 points, while the girls placed fourth overall with 61 points.

Falcons coach Scott May said the result surprised him given the numbers his boys were facing.
