There’s a quiet one in every group.

You know, the one who thinks before they speak; the one who has things to say but doesn’t always feel the need to say them just for the sake of speaking.

Juneau-Douglas senior Daffodil Alinson is a quiet leader for the girls’ state-bound soccer team, and as a midfielder, she is the straw that stirs the drink for the Crimson Bears. She’s not always the most vocal. But on this year’s team, she doesn’t need to be.

The Juneau-Douglas boys’ soccer team has made itself a fixture on the state championship stage, playing in the title game nine of the last 11 years the ASAA has sanctioned the event.

While the Crimson Bears surely want to make it 10 of the last 12, the most important number on their minds at this point is two, as in two straight state championships.

Juneau-Douglas drew the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament and will face No. 7 Colony in opening-round play at Dimond High School at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

In the final minutes of the first half on Saturday, the Ketchikan fans at Fawn Mountain went wild, cheering exuberantly with whoops of support and one parent gasping for breath and saying, “resuscitate me.”

All the hoopla was brought about by the Kings’ best play of the afternoon, a pair of perfect passes leading to a golden scoring opportunity. The shot, however, hit the outside of the net, and the Kings scoreless streak against Juneau-Douglas continued with a 5-0 loss.

From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

Thunder Mountain’s boys’ 4-x-200-meter relay team had it in the bag. The school’s first state championship in any sport was locked up after a stirring win during the finals Saturday at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Track & Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.
