It’s been a much-needed break for the Juneau-Douglas girls’ soccer team, but the Crimson Bears were back at work in a big way on Tuesday night.

Thunder Mountain, on the other hand, returned from a recent road trip to Anchorage, seemingly much better for the experience. The Falcons’ defense held down the JDHS offensive attack for much of the first half, only allowing two goals before intermission.

Juneau-Douglas girls’ track and field senior co-captain Maya Rieselbach helped the Bears to another region title this past weekend, but with the state meet approaching and her prep career coming to a close, she is even more determined to finish strong. Rieselbach, who is in her fourth season running track at JDHS, competes in the 100-meter dash, the 200, the long jump, the 4-x-100 relay and 4-x-200 relay. She has an interest in the field of anatomy, plans to go to college in Maine after graduating and can be found riding her unicycle on trails by the glacier in her free time.

And the streaks continue.

Juneau-Douglas swept the 4A portion of the Region V Track & Field Championships after the boys’ team held off upstart Thunder Mountain on Friday and Saturday at Thunder Mountain High School, while the Crimson Bear girls sprinted to the finish line.

The Juneau-Douglas boys finished first with 72 points, followed closely by Thunder Mountain’s 68. Ketchikan was third with 26.

JDHS won the girls’ meet with 90 points. Thunder Mountain was second with 57, and Ketchikan third with 22.

The Crimson Bears boys’ soccer team started the season with several injuries to key players, and it’s been trying all year to become cohesive as a unit again.

But Juneau-Douglas looks close to regaining its form as a group, and that’s bad news for the rest of the state.

The Bears rocked the Wolves with an 8-0 victory on Saturday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park, giving them a two-game sweep of Sitka and the seventeenth clean sheet of the season.
