It was a picturesque evening at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park, and the Crimson Bears were picture perfect.

Juneau-Douglas scored early and often, rolling to a 68-0 shutout win over Thunder Mountain in the inaugural Glacier Bowl battle between the new crosstown rivals.

It was the first meeting between the teams on the gridiron, with the deeper Bears outmanning the Falcons. TMHS is in the new Medium Schools classification, while JDHS plays in the Large Schools division.

It’s a brand-new season with all-new challenges, expectations and obstacles to overcome, and Juneau-Douglas is once again flying under the radar.

Nine months after finishing up in the semifinals with a disappointing 21-18 loss to West Anchorage in a game the Crimson Bears dominated statistically, JDHS is eager for another crack at a state title.

Juneau-Douglas softball manager Dave Massey and assistant coach Glen Alt were recognized Friday by a large gathering of family and friends of the program where the magic happens each spring: Melvin Park.

Massey, 68, is entering his 40th year on the sideline, while Alt, 63, has been coaching for 30-plus years.

The Railbelt All-Conference softball team was announced this week, featuring three selections from Juneau-Douglas.

Malin Murray, Jennifer Nelson and Taylor Larson all were selected to the team, joining Lathrop’s Alex Chmura and Kacey Duffield, Colony’s Devan Clark, Sam Everett and Olivia Martin, West Valley’s Corrie Donovan and Shiana McLean, Wasilla’s Kaylee Lyles and North Pole’s Corrie Donovan.
