Juneau-Douglas High School clinched the conference regular season baseball title last weekend and the Thunder Mountain Falcons tumbled from third to fourth as the Region V teams gathered at Adair Kennedy Field for a preview of next weekend’s southeast tournament.

For the Crimson Bears (11-1 in conference), the regular season conference title required continuing their winning streak started at Sitka last week. In that trip, JDHS opened with a 9-5 loss to the Wolves and then beat Ketchikan 8-5 and Sitka 11-3. They then stopped Thunder Mountain 2-1 on Tuesday and 13-3 on Thursday.

The only first Naomi Welling doesn’t have is a first class seat on Alaska Airlines back to Juneau today… but the Thunder Mountain High School freshman should.

Welling has beaten the region, the upper classmen, the odds and now even the weather could not slow down the talented Falcons athlete.

Welling won three state titles over the weekend during the high school track and field championships at Fairbanks’ Lathrop High School, her flaming red hair setting each event on fire as she scorched the competition in sub 30-degree temperatures and light snow.

The Thunder Mountain High School boy’s soccer team put up one of the best defensive efforts of the season against Juneau-Douglas on Thursday night at TMHS Field.

On a night honoring their seniors, the Falcons’ Jasper Soriano had a game that was praised by opposing coaches as he pulled at least five sure goals out of the danger zone.

The Crimson Bears would clinch a state berth with the 3-0 win but the game could have changed with one goal as the Falcons only trailed 1-0 starting the second half.
