Falcons tour the State Capitol building 

Thunder Mountain High School baseball players Tim Christensen, Hary Elizarde, Patrick Minsch and Taylor Peterson, along with student manager Ashley Luck and coaches Todd Luck and Bill McCauley combined a team raffle ticket sales opportunity with a civics lesson field trip to the State Legislature in the State Capitol building on Saturday.

The building was full of staff while legislators wrestled with details of the Operating and Capital Project budget bills as they were nearing the end of session.

Falcons sweep the track at Ketchikan 

The Thunder Mountain High School track and field team swept the overall boys and girls titles at the Ketchikan Invitational over the weekend, claiming 16 first place finishes and a host of seconds.

“We are extremely pleased with how we competed this weekend,” TMHS coach Scott May said. “It was just an incredible performance by many of the athletes here from all the schools.”

Thunder Mountain girls earn first-ever pitch-win over JDHS 

With 16:09 remaining in the first half of Thunder Mountain High School’s home game against Juneau-Douglas on Friday night, Falcons junior Michaela Demmert crossed a pass in front of the Crimson Bears’ net and freshman teammate Amber White scrapped in a pack of white and black-clad soccer players.

White’s grit paid off as she put in the first ever Falcons’ goal against their cross-town rival and started what would be an historic night for TMHS.

1963 Juneau-Douglas All Alaska Champions 

The 1963 Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boy’s basketball team came into the southeast tournament at Ketchikan with a 15-1 conference record, but would need a miracle to take the title.

Coach John Borbridge Jr. was in his second year at the helm. His predecessor, Bill Ordway, was the most successful high school coach in Alaska, winning state championships in 1955 (Ordway’s first year), 1958, and then in 1960 with uniforms opponents called “candy stripers.”

Falcons fall to Moose 62-57 in double overtime at state 

The Thunder Mountain High School boy’s basketball team had another page of history in their hands ready to be written during double overtime at the 2013 4A boy’s state basketball tournament on Friday at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.

Although that history will be scripted and read at a later date, the moments provided in this game will live on in the program’s young existence and set the bar for future Falcons’ teams.

Falcons lose a heartbreaker in first state tournament game 

The Thunder Mountain High School Falcons lost their first ever state basketball tournament game 60-56 to the state’s number-two ranked Colony Knights.

It easily could have been a different outcome.

With five minutes remaining in the game, the Falcons trailed by just three points to the Knights. They had led in the first half and in the opening moments of the second half.

Then it was welcome to state basketball.

Sam Jahn, Gabi Fenumiai selected to 4A All-State Team 

Thunder Mountain High School senior Sam Jahn and Juneau-Douglas High School senior Gabi Fenumiai were both selected to the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 4A All-State Basketball Third Team. The two will be playing in this week’s high school state basketball championships at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena. Jahn’s Falcons will take on the Colony Knights who placed two players on the second team, Hunter Eisenhower and Damien Fulp.

With Region & Southeast titles earned, Alaska crown next for Falcons 

At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday history will be made once again for new Southeast high school basketball power house Thunder Mountain as they face the Colony Knights in the ASAA State Basketball Championships at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.

“I smile every time I think we are going to state,” TMHS coach John Blasco said. “It is a great feeling.”
