Falcons control own destiny 

Thunder Mountain needed a win Friday night but more importantly, it needed an 18-point victory over Sitka in Juneau to keep its playoff hopes alive.

And Ben Jahn delivered.

Jahn booted a late 27-yard field goal — easily the biggest kick in school history — to give the Falcons a 19-point, 25-6 victory over the Southeast Conference rival Wolves, putting Thunder Mountain in the driver’s seat for its first-ever home playoff game if it can get a win at Ketchikan on Saturday.

Bears sweep Sitka Invite 

Juneau-Douglas continued its cross-country dominance in Southeast on Friday after sweeping the boys’ and girls’ meets at the Sitka Invite, with David Francie and Sid Browning once again winning their respective races.

Thunder Mountain also had a successful meet, finishing third in both races. It was the highest finish ever for the TMHS girls in a 12-team meet after the Falcons full roster ran for the first time this season with one week to go before the region meet at Ketchikan on Saturday.

Bears' Francis finishes 4th at Palmer Invite 

The rest of the local prep cross-country runners competed in Haines over the weekend, with Thunder Mountain taking second on the boys’ side and a Juneau-Douglas split-squad taking second on the girls’ side.

Sitka’s Niko Friedman won the boys’ race in 19:30.1, followed by the Falcons’ James Steeves (20:56.9). Juneau-Douglas’ Martin Woodby also cracked the top 10, finishing seventh in 21:39.7.

Sitka won with 30 points, followed by Thunder Mountain’s 67, Haines’ 76, JDHS’s 89, Yakutat’s 113 and Sitka 2 with 147.

Falcons rip Kings for first win 

Maybe the Falcons should consider wearing pink more often.

Thunder Mountain picked up its first win of the season Friday night, pulling away in the second half for a 48-21 Southeast Conference victory over the Ketchikan Kings in Juneau.

TMHS sported new uniforms with pink numbers, lettering and socks to help raise awareness for breast cancer during the first-ever Falcons Care Night. All gate proceeds and money raised was donated to the Cancer Connection, benefitting those in need in Southeast who are battling cancer.

Local swim/dive teams compete in Petersburg 

Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain each competed in a two-meet, two-day swim and dive competition with four other Southeast schools over the weekend in Petersburg.

The results were the same for both days, with the Ketchikan girls and Petersburg boys winning both meets.

On Friday, the Ketchikan girls finished first with 122 points, followed by Juneau-Douglas with 97, Petersburg was third with 46, Thunder Mountain fourth with 22, Sitka fifth with 18 and Craig sixth with 8.

TMHS football joins fight against breast cancer 

Friday night is all about the bright lights shining over the gridiron, but some things are bigger than football. And tonight at Thunder Mountain High School is just such an occasion.

The Thunder Mountain football and cheer teams, in conjunction with the Peregrine Booster Club, are hosting the first-ever Falcons Care Night in support of the fight against breast cancer. The Falcons are taking on Ketchikan at 8 p.m. in a Southeast Conference clash.

All money made at the gate, from the sale of “memory balloons” and donations will go directly to Cancer Connection.

JDHS X-C sweeps Wrangell meet 

Juneau-Douglas cruised to big wins in the boys’ and girls’ 5K cross-country races for the second time in as many weeks Saturday in Wrangell, with David Francis and Sid Browning once again posting the fastest times.

The JDHS girls’ and boys’ teams ran away with the overall top spots, both winning handily.
