Sylvia and Richard Gard will celebrate 50 years of marriage Saturday, April 20 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with music by Dale Wygant and his band. Friends of the couple, who were wed by Rev. Ken Smith at the Chapel by the Lake in 1963, are invited to attend and asked to bring finger foods to share but no gifts. Refreshments will be served.
The Gards honeymooned at Karluk Lake on Kodiak Island, where Richard was in charge of a salmon research station, then later sailed their sail boat, Blue Water, from Alaska to New Zealand, visiting numerous South Pacific Islands along the way.
He is a professor emeritus of fisheries with the University of Alaska. She taught world history at Juneau-Douglas High School. The pair have two daughters, Tiare Pincolini and Greta Gard.
