The capital city of Alaska’s wealth lies within its Native heritage, vast wilderness, and proximity to mountains, glaciers, and bountiful sea. It attracts outdoor enthusiasts from around the globe.
The Juneau Empire was founded as the Alaska Daily Empire on November 2, 1912, by John Franklin Alexander Strong; Strong would later be the second territorial governor of Alaska.
In 1969, Morris Communications purchased the newspaper and reported on the City and Borough of Juneau until 2017, when they sold it to GateHouse Media. Within the year, GateHouse sold the Juneau Empire, Homer News, and the Peninsula Clarion to Sound Publishing, Inc.
Founded in 1987, Sound Publishing, Inc. remains committed to community, with news outlets in Washington and Alaska. Our parent company, Black Press, and Sound Publishing believe that independent, fact-based reporting and holding those in power accountable are essential to healthy communities and a healthy democracy.
