Thanksgiving is approaching, and in Juneau that means that the annual Turkey Shoot is also in sight.
This Saturday, the Juneau Gun Club is hosting the event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It takes place at the JGC and Alaska Department of Fish and Game Hunter Education Facility at 5670 Montana Creek Road. The Juneau Shooting Sports Foundation, the Juneau Archery Club and the ADF&G co-host the event.
Contrary to its name, the Turkey Shoot does not involve shooting turkeys. There are a series of shooting and archery contests and competitions throughout the day, as well as some skill and chance games for kids and adults. Turkeys are the prizes for the competitions, and there are 80 birds up for grabs this year.
Attendees are asked to bring canned food donations this year that the JGC will donate.
People can bring their own shotguns or use loaner shotguns available there. Archery equipment, rifles and pistols are provided, as is ammunition. No personal rifles or pistols are allowed.
