Both aisles of the political spectrum have events planned in Juneau for the upcoming anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade case, which legalized abortion in America.
The Alaskans for Life, Inc. will hold its annual Rally for Life event on Tuesday, Jan. 22 on the steps of the Capitol at noon. Fourth Street between Main Street and Seward Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between noon and 1 p.m. The featured speaker this year is Pat Martin of Alaska Right to Life, according to their website. Their website states they host a rally, do a life chain and picket outside of Planned Parenthood.
“It’s the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and we sponsor the event to commemorate that and respect for all life from conception to natural death,” said Joan Heidersdorf, secretary for Alaskans for Life Inc.
Supporters of the Roe v. Wade decision are also celebrating the anniversary of the decision. LunaFest 2019, also an annual event, will be held Friday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Centennial Hall.
The event is being hosted by Juneau Pro-Choice Coalition. Tickets are $15 and are available from their website at lunafest.org.
