Eaglecrest Ski Area staff and their 14 snow guns got things rolling.

On Thursday morning, Mother Nature came through with its end of the bargain, bringing 7 inches of new snow to the Douglas ski area, green lighting daily operation now through Monday, Jan. 7.

Throughout the holiday break (excluding Christmas day), Hooter and Porcupine chairlifts will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with the Eaglecrest Grill opening at 8:30 a.m., Eaglecrest reported Thursday.

Meteorologist Aaron Jacobs of the Juneau Forecast Office said snow flurries started around 6 a.m. in most areas of town and concluded around 8 a.m. As of 10 a.m., the forecast office in the Mendenhall Valley and Mount Roberts Tramway reported 4 inches of snow, by which time the showers moved on to the Haines and Skagway areas.

“There’ll be some more (snow) showers that will be moving through, but they’re going to be decreasing through the day,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs warned Juneau residents to expect reduced visibility to accompany any future snowfall.
