Juneauites have a few chances to get involved in local government this week, with multiple meetings being open to the public. There’s even a chance to apply to be on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly.
Auke Bay rezoning plan
The CBJ seeks public input for a new rezoning plan for Auke Bay. The new plan includes details for turning the area into a village-like, mixed-use neighborhood with higher density condominiums and more pedestrian-friendly features. The plan is not set yet, so this meeting is the time for interested parties to make their voices heard before the plan is approved. The meeting will be held on Thursday Dec. 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the University of Alaska Southeast Recreation Center.
Search for next District 1 Assembly member
This week is the first full week CBJ is accepting applications for a new Assembly member. Assembly member Jesse Kiehl was elected earlier this month to the State Senate. In anticipation of his resignation in January 2019, the Assembly will be accepting Letters of Interest and Declaration of Candidacy forms beginning Nov. 30 through the close of the business day on Jan. 2, 2019.
Residents eligible for the District 1 seat must live in downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek or near the airport. If you have questions about which Assembly District you reside in, you may contact the Clerk’s Office to confirm your eligibility.
Per CBJ code, the appointed candidate will serve “until the next regularly scheduled election” in Oct. 2019, at which time the seat will be placed on the municipal ballot for the remaining year of the term.
Declaration of Candidacy forms are available on the CBJ website or in hard copy at the Municipal Clerk’s office. In addition to the requirement to file a Declaration of Candidacy form and Letter of Interest, the person appointed to the seat will be required to file an Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) Public Official Financial Disclosure Statement within 30 days of taking office.
City Manager evaluation
The first meeting for the Assembly Ad Hoc Committee for the City Manager evaluation will be at noon Wednesday Dec. 5 at City Hall in conference room 237 next to the elevator. The meeting will be held to select a chairperson and then recess into Executive Session, where members will meet in private.
Review of Aquatics Board governing legislation
A special meeting will be held Dec. 6 to review the Aquatics Board governing legislation. The meeting will take place at 4 p.m. in the City Hall conference room 224.
