Jan. 20, 2019: Style has no age limit as Les Spickler proves. During a recent lunch at McGivney’s, this great-grandfather was dressed casually but stylishly. He wore a classic Pendleton wool shirt and Dockers khaki cargo pants, topped by a Waterproof bomber jacket. Comfortable, practical, and good-looking.

• Juneau Style is a weekly fashion segment capturing how Juneauites dress, whether on the streets downtown, on the fishing docks or on the trails. We believe the Juneau look — XtraTufs, Carhartts, rain gear, all of it! — is something to be celebrated.

Jan. 13, 2019: Neither rain, nor sleet, nor Taku winds can keep these longtime friends and walking buddies from an outing. Even on the worst weather days, they manage to look great. Sandy’s outfit includes a London Fog coat and Dockers pants, accessorized with Merrell shoes and a multi-colored Smartwool scarf and gloves. Mary Lou sports a Patagonia jacket, NYDJ pants, Bandolino boots, with a scarf from JJill and purse by Kate Spade.

What do you wear to the Polar Bear Dip when it is 40 degrees, raining and windy? Anything you want! These three women were ready to go on New Year’s Day. Fang Sukkamol wore an Under Armour long-sleeve black shirt and North Face multi-colored running shorts. Kip Fenton opted for black leggings, a gray jog bra and a gray and purple beanie, while Oat Cummings sported an InGear blue and white tiger bikini. All three were ready for an invigorating beginning to 2019!

Dec. 30, 3018: Out on the town for dinner and a movie, Brad Chauvin caught my eye at “The Four Plates” Peruvian restaurant. His flannel shirt from LL Bean, burnt sienna pants from Prana, and Vasque hiking boots were casual and coordinated. A vintage paisley silk scarf added just the right amount of color and style to his relaxed look.

Dec. 23, 2018: Tis the season to enjoy the holidays in style. As part of an annual decorating tradition, Santa’s helper Mary Siroky recently assisted in hanging holiday lights at the Gitkov dock in Auke Bay. Her stylish outfit includes a requisite Santa’s hat, red jacket, red scarf and black pants and boots. And although her clothes were not tarnished with ashes or soot, she was wearing her requisite OSHA safety belt as she was hoisted into the air.

Dec. 16, 2018: On a cold December afternoon, Dana Herndon and Serena Drazkowski stopped by Auke Lake to catch the sunset. Dana was wearing a navy puff jacket from The North Face, black pants, UGG boots, Boheme texting gloves and a mink neck ruff. Serena stayed warm in brown corduroy overalls and white corduroy jacket, topped off by a gray Pendleton wool hat and black Bueno boots from Shoefly.

On this gray December day, it sure didn’t look much like winter. But that didn’t stop Mark Miller from getting into the holiday spirit on a hike with friends above the tram. Mandatory wardrobe for the mountain was his insulated jacket from Spyder, pants from Slates, and hiking boots from Le Chameau. His fleece neck gaiter, crimson chenille scarf and Santa’s hat brought color to the day and made everyone smile.

Dec. 2, 2018: There’s nothing better than a sunny day in November. Bonny Millard makes the most of it by taking a walk near Amalga Harbor. She dressed stylish and warm in a jacket from Taku Fisheries, black leggings from Athleta, multi-colored leg warmers, a red scarf and brown suede boots. Her best accessory? Her 13-year-old rescue dog McKenzie, who goes perfectly with everything she wears.

Nov. 25, 2018: Here’s a big “thanks” to all the working people in Juneau who help make our community a wonderful place to live. On this day, I ran into Eric Daugherty selling Dungeness crab off the F/V Americanus. Fishing is all about being practical, but I thought Eric also looked ruggedly handsome in his navy Taku Fisheries sweatshirt, jeans and Xtratufs.

Nov. 18, 2018: On a dark and gray Friday in November, Nanci Chisholm was a definite bright spot! On her feet all day at work, she knows how to dress for both comfort and style. This day she wore Black Pixie ankle pants from Old Navy, an Ann Taylor multi-color empire waist blouse, a black shrug from The Dress Barn, and Clark’s wedge sandals, which she says are comfortable inside year round.

Nov. 11, 2018: Even if it is dreary and gray outside, autumn fashion can still shine indoors. Linda Dahl is a perfect example. She combines fitted jean style leggings with a cozy black wool sweater from Charter Club. Her accessories include colorful knee socks, Croft & Barrow sandals, a vibrant turquoise necklace and earrings from Arizona, and her ever-present smile.

Nov. 4, 2018: This woman reminded me that a spot of color can brighten the grayest of November days. The autumn colors of her dress and scarf — plum, crimson and citron — caught my eye, and her knee high leather boots suited her outfit perfectly. I also loved the umbrella. Umbrellas are often overlooked in favor of a rain jacket, but they can really save the day, especially in a wet climate. Don’t let bad weather affect your fashion or style — just grab and umbrella and go!

Oct. 28, 2018: “Wilson” the skeleton knows that it is important to dress up for the holidays, but he believes in a minimalist approach to fashion. For his Halloween costume this year, he chose a black-and-white striped bandana, coordinated black eye patch and around his waist, a colorful red sash. Other than his peg leg and hand hook, the only accessory he needs is his parrot riding on his shoulder. Happy Halloween!

Oct. 21, 2018 Dirk Younkerman loves Alaska and has regularly visited and seasonally worked here since 1993. I ran into him on the trail on a rainy day where he was out enjoying the temperate rainforest. His practical clothes also looked smart—a royal blue Columbia fleece shirt, Kathmandu rain pants from New Zealand, Xtratufs, merino wool neck scarf and buff. An avid videographer, his most important accessories are his video camera and his ever-present smile, which reveals how much he enjoys Juneau.

Oct. 14, 2018: Alec Nevalainen knows how to dress for casual Friday in effortless but classic pieces. This day he wore a Jeremy Argyle NYC button-down blue and white check shirt, Levi’s slim fit jeans, Born black leather derby shoes and a black leather belt. Easy but professional—his look is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee while getting a little work done at Gonzo’s.

She pairs a wool zip-up jacket from Kuhl and cuff-rolled Gap jeans with brown leather boots from Merrell. Her black wool busker cap, Chico sling purse and Rayban sunglasses complete her practical but trendy look.
