A Juneau man and his dog died Saturday after being hit by a car while he was trying to cross Egan Drive, police say.

Michael Mason Sheehan, 74, was crossing Egan Drive near 12th Street toward Harris Harbor when a 2016 Subaru Forester hit him and his dog, according to a Juneau Police Department release. The driver, a 63-year-old Juneau resident, didn’t appear to be impaired and there’s no crosswalk in that area, the release states.

JPD got a call about the crash at 4:25 p.m. Saturday and officers responded along with Capital City Fire/Rescue personnel. It was dark at the time, as sunset was shortly after 3 p.m.

CCFR took Sheehan to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, according to the release. Sheehan’s dog was pronounced dead on scene, police say. JPD Lt. Krag Campbell said the driver has not been charged with anything. Campbell also said Sheehan’s body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Campbell wasn’t sure where the dog’s body was sent.

The road was blocked off for the next couple hours as police began investigating the crash. Police are continuing that investigation.

While the road was blocked off, according to the release, there were multiple unrelated arrests. Allen Edward Klein, 64, drove his car through a police barricade and officers found that he was drunk. His breath-alcohol content was measured at 0.191 percent and he was arrested for driving while intoxicated, the release alleges.

In another unrelated incident, 58-year-old Jeffrey Dale Carpenter pulled a knife on an Alaska State Trooper when he was told to walk around the blocked-off area, police say. Nobody was hurt, but Carpenter was arrested for third-degree assault.
