The Juneau Piano Series is ready for Round 2.
Nic Temple wil take to the piano at the JACC to perform in the ongoing concert series that highlights piano music as well as the relatively new piano at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.
Temple is from Ashland, Oregon, and has not previously performed in Juneau.
“In fact, while I’ve performed recitals internationally, this marks my first domestic trip outside the Lower 48,” Temple told the Capital City Weekly via email.
Series organizer Jon Hays said he knows Temple because the two persued bachelor’s degrees at Southern Oregon University at the same time and spoke highly of Temple’s playing.
Temple said his work primarily consists of lesser-known works from romantic composers and more, but a quarter of his recital will consist of original compositions. This gives the recital a sort of theme.
“There is no specific theme, although choosing a group of lesser-played composers was a certain part of my thought process,” Temple said.
That’s a decision encouraged by Hays, who has said he wants the series to provide a platform for music not often heard in Juneau.
Works to be performed include pieces by Nikolai Medtner, Cyril Scott, Amy Beach, Frederic Chopin and three compositions by Temple.
“Three Moment Musicaux of Rachmaninoff will close the program on a spirited, virtuosic note,” Temple said.
But it will not be the only piece with energy.
Temple said that’s one of the selling points of the planned recital.
“This program has things to offer to everyone: Many of the selections are energetic or lyrical pieces that can be enjoyed by folks who may not be into classical music – the piece I’m performing by Cyril Scott was even featured in a recent video game,” Temple said. “At the same time, classical audiences will find pieces and composers that may be new for them. And of course, everyone loves Rachmaninoff.”
