Player of the Week: Derek Mason

Derek Mason is the Juneau Empire player of the week.

Mason, a senior at Thunder Mountain High School, won the Region V Wrestling Championships 215-pound title on Saturday at TMHS.

Mason won a 7-0 decision over teammate Jake Ferster to become the region champ, and qualified for the state tournament this weekend in Anchorage. Mason is the No. 4 seed in his bracket at the state tournament, which starts on Friday morning.

A total of nine other wrestlers from TMHS and Juneau-Douglas High School also qualified the state tournament by finishing first or second in their respective weight classes at the region tournament.
