When Tekla Waterfield performs at the Rookery Friday, Dec. 21, it will be a family affair.
Waterfield will perform with her mom, Fawn, and sister, Keema, before playing a set with her husband, Jeff Fielder. Fielder, a multi-instrumentalist, also produced Waterfield’s most recent album, “Curtain Falls.”
“I’m looking forward to singing with my sister and my mom,” Tekla Waterfield told the Capital City Weekly ahead of traveling back to Juneau. “We do like three-part harmony. We’re calling it Waterfield, and Jeff’s going to accompany us.”
Afterward, Tekla Waterfield and Fielder will perform songs from Tekla Waterfield’s oeuvre. There is a suggested donation of $10 for performances, but no one will be turned away.
Tekla Waterfield, who spent time growing up in Juneau but is now a Seattle singer-songwriter, took the time to catch up the Capital City Weekly ahead of her upcoming homecoming show.
What brings you to Juneau, I would imagine it’s not just the Rookery show?
TW: My brother and his wife and his two kids just moved back to Juneau. We’ll go up and spend some time with them before the holidays. The show happened because we thought we should do one while we’re back.
Are you excited to be back?
TW: I’m so excited. We love Juneau. My mom is there now already. Everyone’s ready to have some nice family time.
Your last album came out in April, is there anything new in the works?
TW: There’s some initial stages of demos for the next recording. That’s already definitely in the works.
“Curtain Falls” has a lot of studio stuff going on and a few guest musicians. How is it translating those songs live?
TW: I definitely play solo a lot. It’s definitely a totally different vibe — a solo singer-songwriter thing. We also played a CD release show, and then a vinyl release show. For the CD release we had two drummers, and Jeff’s drum machine, and it was like, “Wow, it takes six or seven people to make these songs happen.” We do different versions for different events.
What will the Juneau show be like?
TW: That will be Jeff and I as a duo. We haven’t quite discussed what that will look like. We’ll definitely both have our guitars. It’ll be great just the two of us.
Aside from family time, what are you looking forward to?
TW: Just seeing my old stomping grounds is an exciting feeling. It’s always a trip when you go back somewhere. I actually wrote the song ‘Home Again’ about Juneau. It was about three years ago, I played at the Rockwell, and I played at the Haines fair too. When I was in Juneau, I was having all of those nostalgic feelings. I’m just looking forward to being in Alaska. It always just feels like, “Oh, home.”
The other thing I’m looking forward to is singing with my sister and my mom.
