Salmon play an important role in everyday life in Juneau, and the Goldbelt Heritage Foundation is hosting events this weekend to give people a closer look at how salmon is harvested and preserved.

The events, as part of Goldbelt Heritage’s Family Culture Club, begin with a dinner and storytelling session. People are asked to meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Goldbelt’s building behind the Tlingit and Haida Community Building on Hospital Drive before dinner at 6 p.m. After that, Tommy Jimmi Jr. and John Smith will tell stories about salmon and provide a base of knowledge for the later events.

Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the same location, instructor Sarah Lewis will lead a Salmon for Preservation demonstration. That presentation and activity will end when the job is complete.

On Monday, participants will take a tour of DIPAC Macaulay Salmon Hatchery. Attendees are asked to meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the same location behind the Tlingit and Haida Community Building before heading to the hatchery.

The Family Culture Club events have been taking place all summer, starting with a skunk cabbage harvesting event in April. These salmon preservation events are the final ones of the Family Culture Club activities, but Family Culture Lead Victoria Johnson said there will be more community activities throughout the rest of the year.
