Juneau is leading the state in early voting, according to preliminary figures from the Alaska Division of Election.
According to the division, 240 registered voters from House District 34 (Mendenhall Valley) cast their votes before 4 p.m. Monday, the first day of early voting. Another 196 voters from House District 33 cast their votes in that same period. House District 33 includes Gustavus, Haines, Skagway, Douglas, downtown Juneau and Klukwan.
Among Alaska’s 40 House districts, voters in 34 and 33 cast the most early votes on the first day. The No. 3 district was Anchorage’s House District 20, which saw 152 voters complete ballots.
The first day’s trends continued on Tuesday: by 4 p.m., another 200 voters from House District 34 had cast their votes, as did another 182 from House District 33.
Across the state, 3,007 early votes were cast on the first day. Another 2,640 were tallied on the second.
The information provided by the division does not detail who voted or whom they voted for, it only shows the number of people who voted.
It also does not show where the early votes were cast: early voting stations may have ballots from multiple districts. For example, the early voting station in the State Office Building can accept voters from anywhere in the state.
Early votes are counted on Election Day, just as ballots voted on Election Day itself.
In Juneau, early and absentee voting takes place at the Elections Office in the Mendenhall Mall Annex and on the 8th floor of the State Office Building from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Weekend hours begin in November. On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Mendenhall Mall Annex will be open for voting 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 4, it will be open noon-4 p.m.
