Police seek information in theft of guns, cash, jewelry

Burglary is believed to have happened in Mendenhall Valley in late May or early June

A man in the Mendenhall Valley reported the theft of guns, jewelry, cash and other valuable items in mid-June, and the Juneau Police Department is still looking for any information anyone might have about the incident.

According to a JPD release for the Juneau Crime Line, a 79-year-old man reported that his home in the 8000 block of Poplar Avenue had been burglarized sometime in the three weeks leading up to June 14. The man reported a large amount of cash, as well as a Charter Arms AR-7 rifle and a Walther P22 pistol were stolen, the release states.

JPD Lt. Jeremy Weske said the man had been on vacation for about three weeks, but reported the theft immediately when he returned. The value of the stolen items, Weske said, is estimated at $7,000.

The man also reported two men’s style watches, two men’s style rings, a money clip with a gold nugget, a tie clip bar with gold nuggets, Eisenhower and Sacagawea coins and other miscellaneous items as stolen, police say.

Anybody who might know something about the theft is asked to call JPD at 586-0600 or Juneau Crime Line at 523-7700. People can also go to www.juneaucrimeline.com. Crime Line is a nonprofit organization that helps police departments in their investigations. Tipsters are guaranteed anonymity and could be eligible for a reward.

Police also encourage gun owners to secure their firearms at all times, whether it is in the home, on a boat or while travelling.
