We are writing to commend the Juneau Fire Department for their response on September 17 to the house fire on the Seward Street stairs in downtown Juneau. We live next door. Because we were away from Juneau that morning, we heard many accounts from eyewitnesses as to the courage and competence of the fire fighters. They persevered for hours in difficult circumstances, knocking the fire down repeatedly until it was completely out. We are grateful to them for protecting the buildings around it, including our house. Although we don’t think about it until a fire occurs, these men and women risk their lives to protect the rest of us. We are fortunate indeed to have such a dedicated group in Juneau.
