As a small business owner, I’d like to comment on the current race for mayor. I see one candidate as head and shoulders above the other — Ken Koelsch is getting our family’s vote.
As the owner of a small Juneau business, I’ve noticed the change in the senior sales tax exemption decreasing my sales. Ms. Crane voted for those senior tax exemption reductions, and now the tax exemptions only cover the basics of edible food (only what seniors put in their mouths), heating source
(such as oil), water/sewer, electricity and garbage. Items in our store are not included in the senior sales tax exemption at all. That has hurt me and many of the other small and larger businesses in town. People are ordering goods outside of Juneau instead of shopping locally. If people shop outside, it won’t help the local economy which in turn hurts the town as a whole.
The solution to this problem is to replace Assembly members who voted for the senior sales tax reductions. Ms. Crane was strongly in favor of and voted for the senior sales tax reduction, and now it is time for Karen Crane to stay off of the Assembly.
Please vote for Ken Koelsch on March 15! Ken is somebody who will look out for the interests of all of Juneau.
