I live in Virginia and have no firsthand experience with Alaskan affairs. I was therefore surprised by the report that 36% of the Alaskan population would favor becoming an independent country. How thoroughly has this been considered? When no longer part of the United States, if those 36% ever get their wish, you are no longer under the NATO umbrella and would have to face the Russians on your own. The flippant talk of Putin reclaiming Alaska for Mother Russia would suddenly become a real possibility. Is Alaska prepared to face Putin’s minions on your own? If he wins in Ukraine, who knows how far he would try to go.
