I was outraged to learn that Rep. Cathy Munoz wrote letters of support for defendants in two child sex abuse cases, and she sent one of the letters on her official legislative stationary.
Every public servant knows, or should know, the importance of avoiding any appearance of a conflict of interest or abuse of power. Legislators are seen as people of authority in the community. If Rep. Munoz says her support letters to judges about her friends carry no more weight than anyone else’s letters, she is being dishonest, arrogant or simply clueless.
The victims in these sex abuse cases are too young to vote, but Rep. Munoz should remember that she represents them too. She should have paid more attention to their painful stories and damaged lives before she decided to defend their abusers.
