Letter: Setting an example for dealing with dumping items in public places

A big thank you to Skookum Recycling of Juneau, and Ruby. After months of driving back and forth past an old dishwasher that someone dumped at the side of the road near Lena Beach, I got tired enough of looking at it that I put it in the back of my truck, thinking there must be a city program for keeping Juneau clean.

Police dispatch regretted to inform me that there basically isn’t any such program, but thanked me for picking up the dishwasher. After about a week, I thought I might be stuck with it, but when I called Skookum, Ruby said I could drop it off there.

You know, I may just miss the old thing (the dishwasher that is, not Ruby), but probably not. I am grateful that the experience led me to a business that cares and helps others to care about the place we live. Because personal integrity is hard to enforce, and ultimately an individual decision, there are likely to be other abandoned appliances and autos around town.

Maybe there should be an organized and publicly known city program for dealing with such items. Meanwhile, we can encourage each other to make responsible choices and be thankful for helpful folks like Skookum Recycling and Ruby.
