I have known Mary Becker for nearly 30 years. For decades she was a highly respected middle school teacher at Marie Drake. After retirement, she ran for the Juneau Board of Education, and served nine years as member and president. The most recent six years she has served on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly and last fall unanimously re-elected as Deputy Mayor. Upon the untimely death of Mayor Greg Fiske she became Mayor, serving in that position until a majority of Assembly members opted to run an expensive special election in March for a new mayor, rather than await this election.
She has consistently worked hard for the overall betterment of Juneau and all aspects of life for all our citizens. She has earned the support of every one of us, not just those of District 1, but all of Juneau.
Our “at-large” clear choice is Norton Gregory. His experience as chair of the Juneau Affordable Housing Commission and occupation as the Housing Services Manager for Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority provide a unique background to the Assembly as that body continues to wrestle what is arguably Juneau’s most pressing yet vexing problem. Clear headed and unbeholden to certain special interests in Juneau, he will bring to the Assembly not just his considerable background and experience but wisdom in his decision-making for what is best for all our citizens.
