The outcome of the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly races are critical to our senior population. Your vote really counts this time, and I urge Juneauites to get out and vote Oct. 4. And, vote for Mary Becker, the only Assembly person on our current roster that voted to keep the senior tax exemption the way it was previously.
Why is the senior tax exemption important? It helps seniors live in Juneau year round and stay in Alaska.
Seniors are a vital part of our community. They are volunteers for civic organizations, are strong volunteers for our local fundraisers and in our classrooms. Sadly, many seniors are raising their grandchildren in our community while on fixed incomes. The current Tax Exemption now excludes necessary items such as toiletries, cleaning supplies and paper products. Mary believes these household products are not luxury items and deserve to be tax free as well. I agree.
Remember that all current Assembly persons EXCEPT Mary Becker (and our new Mayor) voted for the current, watered down version of the senior tax exemption that exists today.
