Letter: Why Liebelt has my vote

Some seniors support new taxes.

It’s been a tax blessing to live in Alaska for the past 40 years and enjoy the lowest state motor fuel taxes in America. The lack of state income and sales taxes has enhanced opportunities for people to own their own home, send their kids to college, and build retirement accounts. On top of these tax savings, Alaskans have been getting paid to live here with PFD’s.

We need to be grateful for what we’ve had. We also need to support Juneau with a new tax reality. We are not being cheated with reduced PFD’s and paying 100% of school bonds was clearly stated as a possibility when those bonds were presented.

When candidates say they are willing to make tough choices, they are acting in our best interests. Today that means paying higher taxes to support the quality of life Juneau has enjoyed and voters have approved. With oil wealth reduced, we can pay taxes like the rest of America or we can reduce our quality of life and make the lower 48 look more attractive.

Arnold Liebelt has my vote because he expresses the reality of our times, a reality of necessary taxes to maintain responsible government and quality of life. I’m 65 years old, I plan on making Juneau my home forever. I hope my grand kids will say the same when they are retired.

Mark Miller,

Juneau
