Perhaps I’m jaded, or at least distracted. But spotting headlines about Gov. Bill Walker brokering a $43 billion natural gas project with China didn’t interest me enough to read any of the articles. So I was surprised to find myself fascinated hearing the story from Walker’s own lips on Dec. 19 in Kenai when he and Byron Mallott kicked off the second quarter of their re-election campaigns. Gratified though Walker was to accompany President Donald Trump to China, that was nothing compared to being beside Trump when he shook hands and negotiated with China’s President Xi Jinping. Walker spoke with such authentic awe that I couldn’t help but visualize him as a grizzly bear as wing man to huge powerful wooly mammoth as it wrestled with an enormous Asian bull elephant for the fate of Alaska’s economy. Never have I been more impressed with Walker. More power to you, Bill.
