Opinion: Campaigns are responsible for signs

I am a 45-year-plus Alaskan who has lived in Haines, Juneau, Petersburg, Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Wasilla and now Valdez.

My issue, and one that was printed in the Valdez Star as a letter to the editor, is: Regardless of anything that has happened is ILLEGAL and I am extremely upset at the attitude people — especially the politicians — have taken that it’s OK because its just a “minor” law or it only happens once in a while, or better yet, we have no control over our volunteers.

The fact is that your volunteer is representing you, and YOU are responsible for their actions while they promote YOU. So that means if the person gets drunk and speeds with your billboard in his truck promoting you, then maybe you need to not have them get your sign?!

YOU, the person giving out the signs, need to make sure people are aware of the laws for posting them, and maybe they have to sign a paper saying they do and will follow the laws, BUT above all it’s the nonchalant attitude of “oh well” that really twists my knickers.

Allen Chaffin,

Valdez
