Opinion: Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater

A lot of excuses for Alaska’s budget cuts.

The federal dollars that Gov. Mike Dunleavy wants to leave Alaska seem to be more to help offset the $1.5 trillion tax cut that President Donald Trump and friends did for the big corporations.

Someone always has to take the hit for these huge tax cuts. For example, Ronald Reagan killed the Merchant Marines. It’s usually the less fortunate who take the hit for these huge tax cuts. Another example is the governor’s position on getting rid of senior benefits. His reason is, it’s costing the state $18 million. The feds are kicking in way more than $18 million. That $18 million that seems so crucial to the governor, a large percentage goes directly back into the communities in Alaska.

In my opinion, it looks like two main things are in play here. One is ideology, that nasty word socialism. The other main thing is the governor and his party are doing their part to help offset the Trump tax cut. It sure seems like a lot of excuses for these budget cuts. A lot of people aren’t buying it. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
