Opinion: Gondola plan needs to be well thought out

I am in favor of the Eaglecrest gondola, but we need to be sure that everyone, including the Eaglecrest manager, the board, city administration, the Assembly, Goldbelt Inc. and anyone else interested in Eaglecrest are fully aware of all aspects of this project. This should also include children and young adults who are into skiing since the will be some of the big users of the gondola.

I have been involved in pushing for access into a ski area since 1958. When we finally had access into what is now Eaglecrest, had passed a 1% sales tax and obtained Bureau of Outdoor Recreation money the city took over. I tried to get the city to bring together all of us who had then worked 20 years on this and pick our minds as to what we thought should take place. Instead, the city brought in an outside expert, and you know about outside experts, don’t you? To this day, I see aspects of the Eaglecrest layout that could have been done better, and then there are mistakes that took several years to correct. We don’t need to do this with the gondola.

The Black Bear Lift was different there was an open meeting and a full discussion of what was expected the chairlift would do. I would suggest a Sept. 15 meeting to address all of this.
