Thanks for the July 10 article and subsequent opinion piece on closure of the Steep Creek trail out at the Mendenhall Glacier. After reading the op-ed I went to the glacier and asked a National Forest Service ranger if it was true that the trail was closed to the public (like Juneau residents) but being used by private tour groups (cruise ship visitors on a shore tour). I respect the need to protect the bears, but who will protect Juneau residents from being made second-class citizens in their own town? Looks like the cruise ship folks get downtown AND the run of the glacier for the nicest half of the year.
