Opinion: Union-backed bill would hurt Alaska’s small, independent businesses

Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan should help protect Alaska’s small and independent businesses.

Small, independent businesses are the backbone of Alaska communities and our economy. As former state director for the National Federation of Independent Business in Alaska, empowering local independent and small-business owners across the state is still critically important to me.

That’s why I oppose special interest legislation, known as the Protecting Right to Organize Act (S 420, PRO Act). This bill could have a tremendous, negative impact on Alaska businesses, from retailers and restaurants to hotels and hospitality firms across our vibrant tourism industry.

The PRO Act would give unions more power by taking it away from business owners and employees. It would particularly threaten the franchise business model, which has helped many Alaskans become successful business owners, by essentially turning owners into employees of the brand they have franchised. Limiting franchise opportunities will only hinder economic growth and job creation in our communities.

This bill would also apply a failed California policy to determine whether someone is a full-time employee or an independent contractor. The so-called “ABC test” has been a disaster in that state, limiting employment opportunities for independent contractors like me. Alaskans don’t want to repeat the policy mistakes of California—they want to expand opportunities, not restrict them.

This legislation is designed to grow the power of unions even if that goes against the will of workers or what is best for local businesses. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan should help protect Alaska’s small and independent businesses, and the rights of all workers, by opposing this harmful bill.
