The 21st Alaska Bald Eagle Festival is this week in Haines.
The festival started Monday, Nov. 9. The celebration focuses on the thousands of eagles that flock to in the Chilkat area through the fall, complete with eagle-viewing at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, live eagle feedings and presentations, an eagle photography class, and walks through the American Bald Eagle Foundation’s re-designed aviaries.
Throughout the week, experts will speak on topics including mountain goats, bears in the Chilkat Valley, bears’ role in seed dispersal, avian anatomy, Tlingit canoe-carving with master carver Wayne Price, dance groups, and, of course, eagles and the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Daily buses and vans will take attendees to the preserve to witness the annual “Gathering of the Eagles.” At this time of year up to 3,000-4,000 eagles can be found in the preserve feeding on a late run of salmon.
The event runs through Sunday, Nov. 15 and is hosted by the American Bald Eagle Foundation.
