Alaska Community Foundation announces scholarships

The Alaska Community Foundation has awarded academic scholarships to 52 students across the state, including ten in Southeast Alaska. Established by community members who are passionate about helping students achieve their dreams, scholarships at The Alaska Community Foundation are awarded to students in many different fields.

Among the 2016 scholarship recipients were Nathan Fousel of Ketchikan who received the Red Boucher Scholarship for outstanding Alaskan students in the pursuit of technology education and/or training; Mary Keele of Ketchikan who received the Tim Akers Scholarship for outstanding Alaskan students in the pursuit of technology education and/or training; and Bernadette Franulovich of Ketchikan who received the Kayhi Alumni Scholarship for outstanding Ketchikan high school seniors in the pursuit of higher education.

Kaylahni Bidiman of Hoonah received the Hoonah Education Association Fine Arts Scholarship for those seeking to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

Scholarships in support of Sitka and Wrangell high school students pursuing post-secondary education for four years went to Michael Bekeris, Walter Palof and Kaysia Whitmill of Sitka and Blake Stokes, Amy Jenson and Matthew Gerald of Wrangell.

Scholarships at The Alaska Community Foundation range in size from $500 to $20,000, with some providing multi-year support.

Scholarship season isn’t over yet at The Alaska Community Foundation. There are three more scholarships that are still open for 2016. The David E. Knox Memorial Nursing Fellowship is open from Sept. 1-Oct. 21. The Returning Exchange Student Scholarship is open from Sept. 1- Oct. 21, and the Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship is open from Sept. 1-15.
