Alderworks Alaska Writers and Artists Retreat in Dyea has extended the application period for Summer 2016 residencies through Feb. 15. Two 4-6 week residency periods will be offered.
Founded by Skagway residents Jeff and Dorothy Brady on family property, Alderworks residencies are open to writers and artists needing a quiet place to create. It is located on the banks of West Creek in Dyea, nine miles out the Dyea Road from Skagway and within the Dyea-Chilkoot Trail unit of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Restoration of the three resident cabins – Bea, Margaret and Mary Jane – and a bath house occurred in the summers of 2012-2014. Cabins include a kitchen with utensils and cookware; propane, wood, electricity, running water, and drinking water; bath facilities and towels; a laundry facility; wireless internet (slow in Dyea but available); bicycles for getting around Dyea. Resident artists will provide their own food and car if they need one.
The purpose of Alderworks is to enhance the creative process, according to its website. Those selected will be asked to contribute something to the community while they are there, such as giving a reading, having a small show, or hosting a workshop.
