Arboretum celebrates 10 years with cake, bugs and music
Record attendance marked the celebration at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum last Saturday during its 10th birthday party.
About 300 folks enjoyed the garden in its midsummer glory while enjoying bluegrass music, as well as cake and ice cream served by Merrill Jensen, the arboretum’s horticulturist and Kirk Duncan, CBJ Parks and Recreation Director.
Kids armed with bug nets and magnifying glasses searched the garden for elusive insects, a popular “Bug Day” activity. Mayor Ken Koelsch commented that every child he saw was wearing a big smile.
Geologist Cathy Connor cut the ribbon on the arboretum’s newest feature, a Garden in Words. It is an interactive garden with words etched in stones that can be creatively arranged. It has already proven a hit with visitors of all ages.
The arboretum, located at mile 23 Glacier Highway, is a CBJ Parks and Recreation facility. It is free to visit year round, Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
