Archery area closed to Mountain Goat hunting in Unit 1C

Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Douglas announced an early closure to the mountain goat hunting season under the state registration permit hunt RG014, for that portion of Unit 1C draining into the south bank of Little Sheep Creek, Gastineau Channel south of Little Sheep Creek, Stephens Passage, and Taku Inlet between the mouth of Little Sheep Creek and Taku Glacier.

Based on an aerial survey conducted on Sept. 25, 2014, a combined guideline harvest objective of 8 points (male goat = 1 point and female goat = 2 points) was established for the archery hunt area RG014.

As of Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, six male goats and one female goat have been harvested in this area for a total of 8 points. Due to the vulnerability of goats in this area, and because the guideline harvest level has been met, an emergency order has been issued to close the goat hunting season in this area.

The remaining area of registration mountain goat hunt RG014 between the Blackerby Ridge and Salmon Creek Reservoir was also closed by emergency order, however all other mountain goat hunting regulations in Unit 1C remain unchanged and are not affected by the emergency order.
