AWARE thanks community for involvement in running programs

On Dec. 5 the Juneau community joined with AWARE to celebrate the accomplishments of students participating in our prevention programming 5K events. Juneau students marked the end of the season for Juneau’s Girls on the Run of Greater Alaska, and for Boys Run: I toowú klatseen/ Strengthen Your Spirit, at the Wells Fargo Dimond Park Field House.

Girls on the Run International is a non-profit based in North Carolina, and AWARE holds the Greater Alaska Council. Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum which integrates running. Boys Run: I toowu’ klatseen/ Strengthen Your Spirit is a Southeast Alaska curriculum, incorporating Southeast Alaska Native values and traditions into lessons. Both after school running programs utilize social/emotional curricula to bring empowerment to participants as well as the larger community by teaching clear communication, fairness and healthy boundaries.

The prevention team at AWARE, Inc. thanks all of the wonderful volunteers who came and decorated and hosted activities for the children to enjoy during their celebrations. Girls on the Run thanks Pat Belec from the Dance Loft for the wonderful dance warm-up; High Five for the fierce animal faces; Super Bear, Breeze Inn and Heritage Coffee for the snacks and drinks, and Walmart for decorations.

Girls on the Run also thanks HECLA Charitable Foundation, Valley Medical Care, Wells Fargo, Juneau Bone and Joint Center, Rainforest Pediatrics, Jan Caulfield Consulting, MRV Architects and Glacier Pediatrics for their financial contributions. Girls on the Run is partially funded by the citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenues. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to make this program a reality for many young girls!

Boys Run I toowú klatseen thanks the extraordinary volunteers and parents who helped run the 5K event, including Ricky Tagaban for face painting and The Woosh.ji. een Dance Group led by Kolene and Lyle James. The Boys Run I toowú klatseen team also thanks Rainbow Foods for the wonderful snacks and The Northern Tea House for the refreshing beverages.

AWARE hopes to partner with Juneau elementary schools and implement both programs again in the spring. If you would like to learn more or get involved please call Cecelia or Rachel at 586-4902 for more information.

Again, thank you, Juneau! We couldn’t do it without you!
