A huge congratulations to Capital City Weekly columnists Jim Hale and Dick Callahan, who each got first place in this year’s Alaska Press Club Awards, announced April 23. Hale’s “On Writing” got first place in the Suzan Nightingale Award for Best Columnist category among small papers. “Jim Hale’s columns on writing offer a fascinating and philosophical glimpse into the writer’s world and the world of writing,” the judge wrote. Dick Callahan won first place among small and large publications (a combined category) for best sports or outdoors column. “You’re a fantastic storyteller,” the judge wrote. “I particularly enjoyed the column on sharpening knives for fish season. Great work!”
We’re so proud of Dick and Jim! Check out “On Writing” in this issue; Dick Callahan’s column (which may soon be called “Woodshed Kings”) will next appear in the May 4 Capital City Weekly.
