Communities in Schools of Juneau received a $2,500 donation from Wells Fargo Bank.

CIS-Juneau is a local non-profit program dedicated to helping at-risk students stay and succeed in school. They are an accredited affiliate of Communities In Schools, a dropout prevention organization.

Locally, CIS-Juneau partners with the Juneau School District to place a site coordinator, program specialists and volunteers directly in the school. The site coordinator connects students to the community services and resources they need to overcome obstacles and challenges to learning such as trauma, drug use and instability in the home.

CIS staff run in-school programs that help students confront and overcome these barriers.

In a statement, CIS-Juneau said they currently operate a comprehensive program at Juneau-Douglas High School and assist with funding and management of the popular Breakfast and Books program at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School. Over the past two years, CIS-Juneau said they have helped JDHS increase its overall graduation and attendance rates.
