City Museum offers geology walking tour

Have you ever wondered how old the rocks under your feet are? Or why gold is found here? Then check out this walking tour being offered by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

The special evening walking tour focuses on downtown geology on Thursday, July 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. The tour will highlight the general geology of downtown Juneau, and how this geology has influenced our downtown development and history. The walk will be about 2 miles in length and will begin at the City Museum, located on the corner of 4th and Main streets, and end at the Downtown Public Library. Terrain will be downhill or flat, with no stair-climbing.

The tour will be led by Cathy Connor and Mike Blackwell. Connor is an emerita Professor of Geology who taught Earth Science courses at UAS for 23 years. Blackwell is a retired geological engineer living in Juneau.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children ages 12 and younger and may be purchased at the City Museum or by calling 907-586-3572. The tour includes free admission to the City Museum as well as a coupon for 20 percent off in the museum’s gift shop. Space is limited to 20 people, so advance reservations with payment are recommended.

More information about the City Museum can be found on the museum’s website juneau.org/library/museum. The City Museum is located at 4th and Main streets, and the phone number is 586-3572. Summer hours are: Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and beginning July 2, Sunday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Summer admission is $6 for general admission, $5 for ages 65 and older, and free for ages 12 and younger and Friends members at the Family level and higher.
