Coffee & Collections highlights Tlingit language learners

The Juneau Douglas City Museum will host the the Tlingit Language Learners group for a discussion of learning from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Dec. 3, for Coffee & Collections.

Anne Fuller will be leading the discussion. Attendees will hear stories of what group members have learned and the group will also discuss books, websites, CDs, apps and even Facebook pages for learning Tlingit.

In addition to listening to the different uvular sounds and hearing why adults are playing card games to perfect their memory of numbers and colors, those who attend will learn some of the words to describe the paintings of Barbara Craver’s exhibit, “Yadaa.at Kalé, Beautiful Face,” on view at the museum through Dec. 31. Craver has themed her exhibit around Tlingit place names, giving a new perspective when looking at the landscape around us.

Everyone in the community with any level of language knowledge is welcome to join. The event is free, and coffee will be provided courtesy of Heritage Coffee Company.

The Tlingit Language Learners Group meets in an informal session on Mondays at the downtown branch of the Juneau Public Library. Everyone is welcome. Contact tlingitlearners@gmail.com with questions about the group.
