Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Sealaska Heritage Store will host artist demonstrations and offer salmon season specials at the Walter Soboleff Building for First Friday, August 5. Award winning Tlingit and Haida weaver Della Cheney, who is originally from Kake, and Tlingit and Haida carver Fred Lauth Jr., who grew up in Saxman, will create art in the lobby and answer questions about their work during the First Friday reception from 4:30-8 pm. SHI will offer free admission to Shuká Hít (the clan house) and the Nathan Jackson Gallery. The store will celebrate salmon season by offering discounts on every salmon related item in stock, from food merchandise to jewelry. Everyone is welcome.

Mark Davis, Niall Johnson, and Mirov Menefee, three of The Canvas’ resident artists, will have a group show in August. Often referring to themselves as “the Three Amigos,” they spend mornings in the studio together sharing techniques, materials, and a common sense of humor. Their work is festive and highly detailed with bright, bold colors, often utilizing graphite, watercolor, and colored pencil. This show debuts new collections by each artist.

Our featured artist for August 2016 is Nathalie Parenteau. Nathalie is one of the premier artists currently working in the Pacific Northwest, and an Annie Kaill’s bestseller. Nathalie’s modern interpretation of northwest wildlife and scenes has attracted a following from collectors worldwide. August features an expanded selection of Nathalie’s prints and canvas reproductions, and personalizations. In particular we will be featuring three new prints: “Harmonia,” “Raven Mandala III,” and “Another Woodland Attraction.”

Kent Chastain is the featured artist for the Juneau Artists Gallery First Friday event and for the month of August. A photographer for more than 30 years, Chastain’s recent move to Juneau from Kauai has provided a perfect backdrop for his love of landscape photography. Auke Bay is Chastain’s “front yard” and he has captured gorgeous scenes there as well as in many locations around Juneau. He looks forward to showing his work and meeting new friends at our First Friday event from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Snacks will be provided.
