Flying Lions thanks community for welcome of USS Juneau’s silver service

The Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club would like to thank the Juneau community for their support and attendance at the recent U.S.S. Juneau presentation silver unveiling. The silver set, presented to the U.S.S. Juneau in 1942, has returned home thanks to the hard work of many. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum negotiated the loan and acquisition with the U.S. Navy. This is a historical event that brings back good and bad memories of so long ago when 683 sailors and crew of the U.S.S. Juneau CL-52 perished at the Battle of Guadalcanal when a Japanese torpedo hit, and sunk, the U.S.S. Juneau.

The Club specifically thanks Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, for helping to locate the collection, the Prospector Hotel for donating accommodations for former U.S.S. Juneau LPD-10 Capt. Eugene Bailey and his wife, who attended the unveiling; Jane Lindsey and Jodi DeBruyne for their tireless efforts on acquisition and display of this historical addition to our Museum. To the military sectors of Juneau, and veterans organizations, Goldbelt and Juneau Goldbelt Tram, Inc., we are grateful. The U.S.S. Juneau presentation silver is on loan from the U.S. Navy for the next 10 years and can be viewed at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
