Free kids’ workshops at the SLAM

Kids ages 6-12 can sign up for free youth art activities at the Andrew P. Kashevaroff State Library, Archives, and Museum to celebrate the national traveling exhibit “First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare,” on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library. Call the Alaska State Library at 465-2920 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to register.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, kids will explore Shakespeare’s words through their voices, movement, and imaginations, led by theater educator Donnie Gott. The morning session from 10-11 a.m. is designed for kids ages 6-8 and the afternoon session from 1-2 p.m. is for ages 9-12.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, participants will create their own costumes and crafts relating to Shakespeare’s times, led by Valerie Snyder of the BrownBoots Costume Company at Perseverance Theatre. There are two sessions of this activity, 10 a.m. -noon and 1-3 p.m.

These programs are partially funded by the citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenues.

Anyone experiencing a disability who needs accommodation for these events can contact the Division’s ADA coordinator at (907) 465-2988 to make any necessary arrangements.

First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library is on exhibit at the Andrew P. Kashevaroff building through August 24. Exhibit hours are Monday-Saturday, noon-5 pm. Visit lam.alaska.gov/FirstFolioAlaska for more information. The exhibit has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and by the support of Google.org, Vinton and Sigrid Cerf, the British Council, Stuart and Mimi Rose, and other generous donors. It is produced in association with the American Library Association and the Cincinnati Museum Center.
