Friends of the Flags volunteers finish installation

Friends of the Flags volunteers Mike Baxter, Don Beard, Bruce Botelho, Jim Carroll, Chad Cameron, George Fisher, Tom Gill, Dan Kenkel, Charles Payee, Eric Peter, John Peterson, Judy Ripley and Brad Waldron just finished installing the 50 state flags on Egan Drive from Marine Park to 10th street. We began this project in 1977. Why? Because we’re proud of our capital city and want visitors to feel welcome to enjoy its scenic beauty.

When the project started 40 years ago at the suggestion of Mayor Bill Overstreet, organizer Rudy Ripley sought help from his fellow firemen who provided the labor. A ladder truck from the fire department was used for access to install and remove the flags. Tyler Rental later stepped up to provide a manlift for the job.

Some have wondered if the flags are arranged in any particular order. They are not. In the beginning we had a funding mechanism where supporters could pay $50 to have their home state’s flag purchased and installed. Eventually we raised funds to purchase flags for the remaining poles. Decals identifying the flags were affixed and we just make sure the flag and decal match.

Many have contributed to the project’s longevity. First of all, those who have supported us with their donations. We are a nonprofit organization and depend on financial aid from the community. Next is our group of volunteers who handle everything from preliminary coordination, permitting, attaching flags to brackets and making necessary repairs to actually installing the flags.

Special thanks to longtime supporters Tyler Rental, Peter Bernstein, the City and Borough of Juneau, Juneau Police Department, the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, KINY-KSUP, and to the Empire for publishing our letters and photos.

Donations may be sent to Friends of the Flags, P.O. Box 32201, Juneau, AK 99803. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, we can use your help. Contact Jim at 586-6115 or Judy at 789-8080.
